"I work like a seismograph and draw an echo of the room"

Cafeteria of the Goethe Institute Prague, Czech Republic

Heike Weber's work "Bottomless" for the hallway and cafeteria area of the house is the only contribution that is designed for permanence and was developed in connection with the fundamental renovation and refurnishing of the café. The drawing, which Heike Weber applies with a red permanent marker to a three-millimetre-thick, white cast PU floor, shows once again the productive power of her process. In a first elementary sense, the drawing here is actually autonomous self-expression, nothing more than a line that describes nothing but itself, and its ability to divide the world it traverses into a territory on this side and beyond its line. In the serial repetition of this line, however, the drawing also reflects aspects of a machine-like automatism, which at the same time is relativized again by the individual handwriting of the line application, which is recognizable at all times. However, the line gets its central character, free of two rocks, from its connection with the surrounding architecture. Every element of the architectural floor plan, every retracted column, every skirting board, the red Edding line reacts with the sensitivity of a human seismograph.
